Questions that Parents Frequently Ask

Q. How can I find out how my child is doing at school? I often cannot attend parents’ evenings and they are only once a term.

A. Using the Parent Portal you can see your child’s attendance and progress any time of the day or night, whenever is convenient for you.

Q. What do I need to use the parent Portal?

A. You need a computer, access to the internet and an email address. That’s all.

Q. I do not have my own computer. Can I use the parent Portal from a public library or internet café?

A. Yes you can but make sure that you keep your details secure, in other words do not let anyone see your user name or password and make sure that you log off when you have finished.

Q. I don’t know much about computers. Is it easy to use?

A. Yes, the Parent Portal has been written to be very easy to use.

Q. How will this help my child?

A. It has been shown that the more that parents are involved in their child’s education (parental engagement), the better the child’s progress. Problems can be nipped in the bud by timely communication and praise can be given too!

Q. How will this help me as a parent?

A. You will be able to receive all of the letters and the notes from school that they put on the system for you. Using this system no documents destined for you will be lost.

Q. Will you tell me if my child fails to turn up to school?

A. Yes, the Parent Portal enables your school to contact you by email, text message (SMS) or by phone whichever you prefer.

Q. Who else can see the information about my child?

A. No-one, so long as you keep your logon details secret. You can share a logon with your partner for example or you may choose to have separate ones. The Parent Portal has a very high level of security, it uses the same encryption as online banking.

Q. Will this make a lot of extra work for the school?

A. No, the school already collects this information. The Parent Portal simply makes it available to you in a way which is quick and easy for the school and you. For example they can send you an email telling you of an event rather than printing out hundreds of letters.

Q. How else can I help my child?

A. If your child is absent, you can find out what they have missed and help them to catch up.

Q. How can I find out more?

A. Ask your school about the Parent Portal. Schools will generally send out further information themselves.

Q. Who supplies, supports and maintains the Parent Portal?

A. Oakford Technology is a well established company within the educational sector and has designed and will support and maintain the Parent Portal. Oakford has designed the Parent Portal in association with a number of schools and parents over a significant amount of time.

Q. Why was the Parent Portal designed?

A. The Parent Portal was designed originally for Lavington School in Wiltshire. Lavington is an outstanding school according to Ofsted and wanted to influence the development of a Parental Engagement solution. Working closely with Lavington School and other schools Oakford has designed a simple to use system enabling the school to give you easy access to up-to-date information at all times.

Q. Is my personal information secure?

A. All of the data transferred from the school to the Parent Portal servers and from the Parent Portal servers to the parent is encrypted using 256bit encryption. This is the same level of encryption banks use when you log onto your bank account across the Internet. The Parent Portal servers themselves are physically stored in two secure 24x7 manned data centres both of which offer full redundancy and security.
